چکیده

The direction-dependent acoustic ltering of the external ear plays an important role in sound localization. It is believed to be essential for the detection of sound elevation, whereas sound azimuth follows from binaural diierence cues in intensity and phase. Sound elevation is believed to be coded by prominent and characteristic features in the sound power spectrum at the sensory level, like peaks and valleys. However , it is still not known what the relative importance is of each of these features and how sound elevation can be calculated from them. This paper presents a localization model that enables extraction of the features that can be expected to be relevant in elevation detection. A feature was characterized as a spectral derivative of a certain order and scale, where a simple two-layer network was used to determine its importance in computing sound elevation.

The bat head-related transfer function reveals binaural cues for sound localization in azimuth and elevation.

Directional properties of the sound transformation at the ear of four intact echolocating bats, Eptesicus fuscus, were investigated via measurements of the head-related transfer function (HRTF). Contributions of external ear structures to directional features of the transfer functions were examined by remeasuring the HRTF in the absence of the pinna and tragus. The investigation mainly focused ...

Perceptual Spatial - Audio Coding

A novel technique for the perceptual coding of spatial audio is presented. This coding technique allows individualized 3D audio presentation and exploits the dichotomous roles of the lowfrequency interaural timing and level difference cues versus the high-frequency spectral cues in human sound localization. The high-frequency spectral cues are modified to match the acoustics of the listener’s o...

A model for predicting localization performance in cochlear implant users

Mathematical models can be very useful for understanding complicated systems, and for testing algorithms through simulation that would be difficult or expensive to implement. This paper describes the proposal for a model that would simulate the sound localization performance of profoundly hearing-impaired persons using bilateral cochlear implants (CIs). The expectation is that this model could ...

Neural mechanisms of sound localization in an echolocating bat.

The mustache bat emits a three-harmonic echolocation pulse. At the external ear, large interaural intensity differences are generated only when a sound originates within a limited area of two-dimensional space, and this area is different for each pulse harmonic. As a consequence, the external ear generates pronounced binaural spectral cues containing two-dimensional spatial information. This in...

Contribution of Head Shadow and Pinna Cues to Chronic Monaural Sound Localization

Monaurally deaf people lack the binaural acoustic difference cues in sound level and timing that are needed to encode sound location in the horizontal plane (azimuth). It has been proposed that these people therefore rely on spectral pinna cues of their normal ear to localize sounds. However, the acoustic head-shadow effect (HSE) might also serve as an azimuth cue, despite its ambiguity when ab...
